What is supply chain?

During our 18 month Supply Chain scheme you’ll help ABF take our
food products from ‘field to fork’. The Supply Chain is an intertwining network of departments; Manufacturing, Continuous Improvement and Production Planning, to name but a few! Depending on which of our 8 businesses you work for, you can expect to do placements in any department within the chain. Ultimately no two placements or schemes are the same.

The food industry is an exciting place to be; constantly evolving, and reacting to new market trends. Through every unexpected challenge, you’ll help steer our products through the Supply Chain in the safest and most efficient way.

What will you be doing?

There’s no such thing as a ‘standard’ day in the life of a Supply Chain Grad! It all depends on your business and role; no two schemes are the same. You will gain a great overview of the entire process of food manufacturing; from sourcing all of the ingredients and packaging, through to planning of production. Whilst doing this you will also learn and develop essential leadership skills, receive regular coaching and feedback from your line manager whilst attaining invaluable skills through structured training and mentorship.

Here are just a few of the roles we have undertaken…

  • Been involved in Pataks’ Brexit team; strategising the future changes in supply disruption, customs and tariffs, internal and external communications and regulations.
  • Managed manufacturing shifts; this involves leading a team,
liaising with other departments, health and safety management, and continuous improvement.
  • Helped lead a National Health and Safety Project for Kingsmill.
  • Implemented a new International Environmental Management System across multiple sites for Jordans Dorset Ryvita.… and lots, lots more!!

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for curious, driven and adaptable individuals who are passionate about making a difference to the food and drink brands you encounter every day. Our roles will allow you to gain real responsibility in a challenging environments with a diverse group of people and products in order to make a big difference in our business.

What support can you expect?

Whilst the ABF Supply Chain Programme gives you real responsibility from day one and encourages you to be independent, you will be supported throughout. As a graduate you will have:

  • Your Line Manager and team to support you day to day
  • Your buddy who will help you to settle in
  • Your graduate cohort

You will also receive regular programme-specific and general development training sessions throughout the 2 years, which will help you with skills such as delivering presentations, managing time effectively and project management.

What’s the application process?

The process is a few stages long and nothing to be worried about!

  1. An online application
  2. Online psychometric tests
  3. Video interview- it’s best to prepare for this as if it were a standard face to face interview
  4. An asessment centre. You will be invited down to one of our ABF sites and this will usually entail a competencies and skills based interview, presenting back on a case study, and a group exercise.

All of these stages are designed to get to know you and to understand your passion and strengths that would make you a great fit! So be yourself, and talk about specific examples that help demonstrate why you’re fab!

What our grads say

No two ABF graduate schemes are the same, I think that is something that is so unique and rewarding about being a graduate at ABF. My journey has taken me from procurement, to manufacturing and I even spent 9 months working on our Brexit contingency planning! I've learned a massive amount during my time in ABF and have developed both personally and professionally.

Colin

I had completed some great summer internships during my summers and spent three fantastic years studying Philosophy at the University of York, and I was ready for a new challenge in the world of work. I knew I wanted to join the FMCG industry- an exciting and fast-paced industry.

Lizzie

After completing my degree in Chemical Engineering, I joined the ABF Grocery Engineering graduate scheme in 2015. The 3 main reasons behind me applying to ABF were: the variety of businesses and roles, the commitment to grads post-scheme and most importantly my love of food!
